About IELTS

International English Language Testing System or more commonly known as IELTS, is one of the most renowned and used English language testing systems in the world. More than 3 million people are known to take the test every year.

Educational institutes, government organizations and professional settings all over the world recognize the results of IELTS and offer entrances or services based on that. People usually take IELTS for two main reasons that are either general or academic. If you are planning on studying in an English speaking country, you will have to go for IELTS academic, whereas you can go for general IELTS if you wish to work or move to another country that requires an English proficiency test.

IELTS test format

IELTS test is taken within a time slot of almost 3 hours. The test is not taken as a whole rather it is broken down to four major modules including speaking, writing, listening and reading. The speaking modules are usually taken a week prior to the rest of the test. The other three modules are taken on the same day, one after the other. The duration of the writing and reading tests is 60 minutes, for listening it is half an hour and for speaking the test lasts only for 14 minutes.

Based on the individual results, an overall band is assessed. If you land somewhere between 6 (competent) to 9 (very good) bands, you are good to go.

Writing test

Writing part of the test is divided into two parts within an hour. In the first part, you will be asked to describe a certain diagram, graph, chart or other graphical representation. In the second task you will be asked to write an essay on a particular topic.

Reading test

This part of the test consists of 3 to 4 pages of varied reading material that increases in difficulty as it progresses forward. You are provided with different kinds of reading material in almost 40 questions.

Speaking test

During the speaking test, you will have a discussion with a certified IELTS examiner. It will be one different topics and will last for almost 15 minutes

Listening test

After listening to 4 audios once, you will be asked 40 questions related to them which you will have to answer.

You can use the result of the IELTS test after taking the test for almost 2 years.

Usually there is no maximum set age limit for the test but the minimum age limit for it is 16 and people under this age are not recommended to take the test.

It really depends on your country. All countries offering the IELTS exam have different fee structures based on their currency.

Yes certainly! If you are not satisfied with the outcome of your exam, you can register yourself again and retake the exam as many times as you want.

If you plan on canceling or rescheduling the IELTS exam, then yes you can do so with the application of some terms and conditions.

If you are taking a computer based IELTS exam, then you will receive the results online within the time period of 5 days. On the other hand, with the traditional paper based test, it will take up to two week for the results to come in. A hard copy of the result will also be delivered to you within a week.
